From the 1948 Porsche 356 to the 2024 Porsche 911 GT3 RS this is Our Passion for Porsche. A Kyoto Motorsport Tribute to the Legacy of Performance
Since the beginning, Porsche has stood for more than just speed. It's about precision, legacy, innovation — and emotion. At Kyoto Motorsport, our story is inseparably linked with the spirit of Porsche.
⚡ The History of Porsche: Precision Engineered Over Generations
The story of Porsche begins in 1931, when Ferdinand Porsche founded "Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche GmbH" in Stuttgart, Germany. Initially a vehicle development consultancy, the company didn't produce cars under its own name until a decade later. One of Ferdinand’s earliest accomplishments was designing the Volkswagen Beetle, one of the most successful cars of all time. But it wasn’t until 1948 that Porsche made its first car under its own name: the Porsche 356.
✔ 1948: The Porsche 356
Built in Gmünd, Austria, the 356 was light, nimble, and beautifully engineered. Only 52 units were hand-built in a small garage, but it established Porsche’s philosophy: performance through lightness and balance. Ferry Porsche, Ferdinand’s son, led the vision, believing that if you couldn’t find the sports car of your dreams, you had to build it.
✔ 1963: The Birth of the 911
Arguably the most iconic sports car in the world, the Porsche 911 debuted in 1963. With a rear-mounted flat-six engine, unique handling characteristics, and timeless design, the 911 was instantly a success. Over the decades, it would evolve into a cultural and motorsport icon, retaining its original soul through generations like the 930 Turbo, 964, 993, 996, 997, 991, and 992.
✔1970s: Dominance in endurance racing
Porsche entered the world stage in motorsport during the late 1960s and 1970s:
The 917 gave Porsche its first overall win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970.
Variants like the 917K and 917/30 dominated both Europe and the American Can-Am series, showcasing Porsche’s turbocharging innovation.
The Porsche 935 and 936 followed, winning Le Mans and countless endurance races.
✔ 1980s-1990s: Innovation and Icons
The 1980s saw Porsche create:
The 959, a twin-turbocharged AWD masterpiece decades ahead of its time
Continued Group C dominance with the 956 and 962C, setting lap records and winning titles across the world
Road legends like the 944 Turbo, 928 GTS, and the 993 Turbo, the last air-cooled 911
✔ 2000s: Water-Cooled Evolution and GT Power
As Porsche embraced water-cooled engines with the 996 and 997, their GT racing programs flourished:
The Carrera GT debuted in 2004 with a screaming V10
The RS Spyder entered LMP2 and beat more powerful LMP1s
GT3 and GT2 models became staples of the track-day and racing world
✔ 2010s: Hybrids and Hypercars
Porsche again rewrote the rulebook:
The 918 Spyder combined V8 power with electric torque, achieving a 6:57 lap at the Nordschleife
The 919 Hybrid dominated WEC, winning Le Mans three times (2015, 2016, 2017)
The 919 Evo lapped the Nordschleife in 5:19.546, breaking the all-time record in 2018
✔ 2020s and Beyond: Electrified Precision
The Taycan introduced Porsche performance to the EV world
The 992 GT3 RS, GT4 RS, and Mission R brought next-gen tech to drivers and racers
Porsche invests heavily in synthetic fuels, sustainability, and future GT platforms
